GALATA TOWER

-The Galata Tower is located in a place dominating Haliç, Bosphorus and Marmara. 

​

-Galata Tower dates back to history after the Genoese settlements. 

​

-In the 1200s, in a period when Rome was weakened, the Genoese, who came to Galata, turned the area around the city walls. 

 

-This tower was built in 1349 by Genoese 

​

-The Galata tower was rebuilt between 1445-1446.

​

-In the period of Sultan Süleyman was converted into prison

 

-He suffered serious damage in the earthquake of 1509. It was repaired by Hayrettin, one of the most important architects of that period.

​

-In the 16th century the Tower became a shelter for Christians

​

-Fire in 1794
-Fire in 1831


-1875 Cone structure changed
-In 1874 Galata Tower began to be used as a watchtower against endless Istanbul fires
-1959-1960 upper part is in the boot
-Repaired in 1964


The Galata Tower, which has undergone a restoration in the Republic period, serves as a restaurant and a view terrace today.
